United States Navy Band Washington,DC March 26th, 2011 Concert & Me

Saturday March 26, 2011
Last night I went to the Navy Band Concert and I was sitting in an isle seat .   Capt. Brian O. Walden the Director of the U.S. Navy Band, Washington D.C.. stopped by me and I stood up.   He put his had out and  I shook hands with him.  I asked him if he would checkout the auburncivicband.com Web Site.  He would see that our band was as old or older than the United States Navy Band. He said that he would make it a point to look at the Web Site
Then I asked him if the Old Anacostia Naval School of Music down the road from the Naval Air Station still open. He said yes it was the headquarters for the Navy Band.  I told him that I practiced and played dance jobs with the musician there even thought I was station at the Naval Photographic Center on the Naval Air Station.

He asked me why no one ever said anything about the ACB before they came here to play.  He wanted to know what instruments I played and the next time The Navy band came back to Auburn his people would make it a point to do something with the Auburn Civic Band,I answered  I hoped so and that tonights concert was amazing.
I hope Capt Walden will look at our Web Site and send a email comment back to us.  I will forward it to every member if that ever happens.  I am  trying to come down from the clouds. I have to believe him and that he was not placating me and would do the things he told me.  Anyway it was great that he took the time to say anything to me.
I hope that Capt. Walden will read my comments so I am going to leave our links so that answering us will be easy

Auburn Civic Band 2011***A New Look on the Web and a New Sound

My Post says:  “A New Look on our Web Site and a New Sound

This year we received a Grant from the Central New York Community Foundation to purchase a Sound System for our Band.  It allowed us to project an pickup all the sounds of  instruments and blen them together to our audiences.

In a way we are now able to use our voices and  talk about our background by “Saying it with Music”.  Our Sound System make it possible to record our concerts and transfer our music to our Web Site. and Blog.  Our Web Site and Our Blog is one way for us to say thanks for your support and donations.

We finished our 2011 concert season at the Auburn Nursing Home and after a short recess on to the Holiday Season.  Thanks again for all  who support us in Auburn  and the surrounding area making it possible for Auburn’s Concert Band  to Play for you.

The Guest Conductor-A Powerful Statement for the Auburn Civic Band

During the summer of 2011 the Auburn Civic Band was closing in on the final three concerts of the season.   The first concert of the final three  was to be at the Clifford Field on August 11, 2011.  We were about to play the final selections after our break.  The Stars and Stripes Forever was up next  and a man was being helped on stage to direct this March.

His name is Vic Sine of Weedsport NY and he directed the march and we all knew right off that he was a very talented musician and Director when we began to play the Stars and Stripes Forever under his Baton.   My curiosity about his background was intense and I began to find out about him from Jim Viccaro our assistant Director.

Who is Vic Sine?  Well here we go.  A Scoutmaster 15 years: Choir Director Presbeterian Church in Weedsport: Served on the Village Board and was Mayor of Weedsport: Now Musically, Vic started at Port Byron High School  playing clarinet: after a while took up the Bassoon: Played in the All State Band in the early 40″s: then on to play Bassoon in the Auburn Symphony Orchestra

When in the Army during World War II , he was a machine gunner. after the war, he requested an assignment playing clarinet in the 6th Division Marching and Dance Band touring Korea. After release from the Army played in the SMS band in Seneca Falls

Vic Sine never stopped as he formed a pit band for local musicals in the 1950′s for several years.  Wow!

We Thank Vic Sine for the pleasure to hand him our baton and allow this fine Director lead us in the Stars and Stripe Forever March. For me Vic Sine was the highlight ot our 101 st season as Auburn’s Concert Band.   All of our membership  thanks Vic Sine for directing  us. He is always welcomed back, take our Baton and Direct us  again.

THANK YOU          Links:  Auburn Civic Band and Blog       http://auburncivicbandinc.com  and      http://auburncivicbandinc.com/blog

Sometimes people sing along with the music and as they  gather together for the Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Inevitabled speeches.   Our Band helps to say it with Christmas Music to set the festive tone

The Parade and the Tree Lighting Ceremony was a great success  and the croud  yell and sang there hearts out.  So we played as long as they wanted us to play.  Hope we are invited back next year.  Hooray to the the people and kids who turned out to spend some time with the Auburn Civic Band .   Our Home town band.  Thanks

Auburn Civic Band’s History and Story is told in the there Web Site

Posted on January 27, 2011 by Joeh

The Auburn Civic Band Web Site traces the voyage this band has taken from it’s inception in 1910.  This site through it’s ten site pages  tells  ACB’s story and History.    It sets the tone by  using the Dedication of the War Memorial  site for Auburn’s and Cayuga County’s Veterans of all Services  and conflicts including the Veterans who never came home as it’s theme.

It traces the Directors of the Band from the beginning because without talking about them  we would not know the leaders who held this band together as a unit for over a 100years.  Our current membership is directed by Jim Best, who  continues with live music  concerts around the Auburn area. Check out our History,Concert Dates with the time and place, our program  and the Celebrities who will be singing or playing with us on stage each week.

The Auburn Civic Band-May it be our Band Forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Auburn Civic Band Practicing at West Middle School for the last time since 1960 when we were part of the Adult Educational Program.

Our name is the AUBURN CIVIC BAND .  Why!    Our Web site tells our story so I wont repeat it here.  Take a few minutes to peruse our Web Site .  It is a great story of our History.  We should require every city employee to read this History lesson because they are learning about our City’s History also.  The Auburn Civic Band Founders did a lot to give inspiration to important things that happened in our past and our citizens should know that to. Click on these Links:  http://auburncivicbandinc.com/  and http://auburncivicbandinc.com/blog

My Post reads:  Can the Auburn Civic Band be Auburn’s Band Forever

The answer is NO!

Then , what is the answer for our survival and when we think about it the answer is very simple.

All of us must support our home town band:

  • The Auburn Enlarged School system, and the Community Colleges,
  • The Four year Colleges and Universities,
  •  Citizens who just put away their musical instruments aside after finishing school can help too ,
  • Help from the City of Auburn Administration to set a better priority for the Auburn Civic Band including the County Administration.
  • We also need one place and the same day of the week for our concerts and time and not move all over so no one knows where we will be each week. Our Mayor can set the tone for our survival

Year after Year We have been playing and supporting our Senior Facilities and the very important Ceremonies for our citizens since 1910.  Think about this, how many groups have survived that long.  I am willing to bet the number will be zero.  We use the remnants of the Syracuse Symphony as an example. Would they volunteer thier time for our Memorial Day Ceremonies, the Christmas tree lighting.  Setting and example and using our own organizations would be nice like Home town Bands etc.   Summer concerts and Senior Home Concerts,Dedications of whatever like we do year after year, and how is that going to happen?  Home community is like family.  Let start using that attitude finally so we can  feel like one family, Auburn NY area.

If we allow our community band to fade into History, it would take a miracle to raise it from the ashes as it is now.   We are asking for support from our own Citizens to get back to playing that instrument , High Schools, Colleges and Universities  administrations to inform their students about our need of their help even if they are not Music Majors.  Helping this Band is fun and think of it as a Hobby ,extra practice during the Summer Recess, find the time to help.   Anyway just consider it.
